What is this?

This is a new blog devoted mostlyish to Advanced Squad Leader, the greatest game on earth.

I recently bought an ASL collection and have probably a thousand scenarios. I also have a regular face-to-face opponent who comes over on Fridays these days. We decided to focus on PTO scenarios, when I was struck with a sudden OCD fit and sifted through all my scenarios, locating all of them which feature Japanese. I then organized them chronologically and proposed that we play through them all, in order. Therefore, one aspect of this blog is to provide a record of PTO AARs, starting in 1937.

I'm excited about the prospect of watching the technologies and tactics develop, as I fight the Japanese as the Chinese, then the Russians and French and British and even Muslim partisans, and finally Americans and Marines.

However, I'm a new player. To date, I've played ten games of full-on ASL. I've played thirty-three Starter Kit games. I've read, oh, about half of chapter A, bits of B as needed, parts of G. One of the things I'll be writing about in this blog, then, is the rules. Mainly notes on what I've been reading, but also quizzes, tactics articles, etc.

So this blog is both a chronicle of lots of PTO games and also my quest to learn the game. Enjoy.
